Cambodian Safety InformationHaving read several articles on the Internet about how dangerous Cambodia is and receiving an e-mail saying someone was put off of coming to Cambodia because of these reports I realise people still believe it's a dangerous country. Cambodia is safe, certainly safer than New York, London or any other major western city. I've lived here over 4 years and have never had any trouble, except from pissed up tourists. Over the last 4 years I know of 2 westerners have been killed in or near Phnom Penh and a couple in Sihanoukville. Compare that to where you live. Unfortunately this only applies to westerners and other obvious foreign persons. The khmers are very intolerant of theft, and killing someone that has tried to steal your motorbike or break into your house is a thing the whole neighbourhood get's into. The basic rule: Anything you do in your country to avoid getting into trouble you should do here. Also avoid rich young/old Khmers, their parents/governement can't control them but can cover up for them. They are probably the closest you'll get to an LA gang banger. Stupid with a gun. Having said that you'll probably never bump into them as they like to hang out in places most westerners wouldn't go (places that charge 3 times the western price for a beer - OK so I go there occasionaly.) The only place you may find them is the Heart of Darkness, which is widely known for it poor security and shootings/stabbings and general lack of security. Unfortunatey it is one of the few places open late at night and closes at 4am. Hopefully you will have found some information that cover thse keywords: Safety in Cambodia, Avoiding dangerous situations in Cambodia, Cambodian safety issues, issues of safety in Cambodia. Current safety situation in Cambodia. |
